The new Black Panther film, part of the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, is one of the year’s most hotly anticipated films, and with a Kendrick Lamar-executive produced soundtrack, the Black Panther universe has the potential of becoming one of the best things of what already looks like a no good 2018. The first tangible sign of what’s to come arrived earlier this week with the Kendrick Lamar/SZA collaboration “All the Stars,” which acts more as a showcase for SZA’s burgeoning stardom than a reinforcement of Lamar’s GOAT status. The song shines with its fluid, contemporary production, a rare market-tested lead single that doesn’t succumb to its corporate interests. While hardly on the same level as the pair’s two 2017 LPs – DAMN. and Ctrl, respectively – it’s still a joy hearing Kendrick Lamar and SZA on such a big platform. While their previous work deserves the most praise, “All the Stars” provides its two stars the space to explore areas uninhabitable to them previously.
