Young Thug’s “singing album,” Beautiful Thugger Girls, is not a country album, despite what you may have heard. Yes, the excellent opening track “Family Don’t Matter” carries with it traces of country, but the album largely adheres to the hues he played with on Jeffery cuts “Wyclef Jean” and “Kanye West,” as well as his More Life collaboration “Ice Melts.” Standout “Do U Love Me” in particular recalls the buoyant energy of “Ice Melts,” and Thugger runs laps around the beat. The deeper we dive into Young Thug’s psyche, the more impossible it becomes to resist his charms. How else can he sing, “fuck me, suck me, L-O-V-E, do you love me” as the hook and the answer be yes? Young Thug has always been compelling, but here he’s commanding.
