Perhaps it has to do with outsized expectations, or artists struggling to find a common musical vocabulary, but supergroups most always are more exciting on paper than on record. So it was with trepidation I took the news last year that Swedish pop heavyweights Lykke Li, Miike Snow and Peter, Bjorn and John had recorded an album together. And as nice as the group’s first two singles were, the project – known as LIV – didn’t feel essential. On their newest single, though, LIV has their first truly great song, “Heaven.” Lykke Li takes the reigns on vocals, and the weathered intensity she brought to her stunning I Never Learn is here in spades. “I know it’s hell, I know it’s helpless,” begins the hook before Li makes way for some light to enter the frame. “But it feels like heaven is waiting for us,” she finishes. They aren’t there yet, but they’re getting damn close.
