Jack Antonoff’s Bleachers is poised for a breakthrough with “Don’t Take the Money”

Jack Antonoff is still best known for his contributions to fun., but he’s quickly leaving just as big of a footprint as a songwriter and producer for artists including Grimes, Lorde and Taylor Swift, as well his own music as Bleachers. His first Bleachers album, Strange Desire, arrived three years ago and found a home in a niche pop market off the strength of tracks such as “Rollercoaster” and “I Wanna Get Better.” His new single doesn’t subvert expectations for a Bleachers track as much as it doubles down on the act’s ethos. Over 80s synths, Antonoff delivers a chorus designed to reach the highest rafters, with the track falling somewhere between the colorful fluidity of the 1975 and the urgency of Confess-era Twin Shadow. “Don’t Take the Money” is a big pop statement, one that should make Bleachers a household name in the months to come.
