“My guy pretty like a girl,” begins Frank Ocean on the newly released “Chanel,” his second new single this year following the Calvin Harris/Migos collaboration “Slide.” Whereas that one found Ocean slipping into a top 40 single with ease, “Chanel” channels his two LPs, channel ORANGE and Blonde to thrilling results. On past records, he has never been as explicit with his sexuality as he is here. While songs such as “Bad Religion,” “Forrest Gump” and “Good Guy” have all subtly hinted at his fluid sexuality, “Chanel” is his most explicit entanglement with gay themes. “Ride the Rodman / Got one that’s straight acting / Turnt out like some dirty plastic,” he sings later on, making John Waters blush. “Chanel” further proves Ocean’s singular talents and just how vital a worldview like this is needed. Here, he’s the toughest guy in the room, and he’ll take your man to prove it.
