James Mercer gets autobiographical on the Shins’ charming new single “Mildenhall”

With Heartworms only weeks away from seeing release, the Shins have released the third pre-release single from their fifth studio album. “Mildenhall” follows “Dead Alive” and “Name For You,” and finds Mercer harkening back to his Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow days. While the song benefits from the band’s increased studio budget, “Mildenhall”‘s unhurried pace, it’s sketch-like feel is most reminiscent of the band’s early work. And it makes sense. The song tracks Mercer as he recalls his own past, tracing his path from here to when he first picked up his father’s guitar. Yet for a song concerned with nostalgia, “Mildenhall” keeps looking forward.

Heartworms is out March 10.
