It’s not the first thing you’d expect to hear from a Real Estate song, but there it is, welcoming us into the band’s new era for new album In Mind. A synth ripples into view at the onset, instantly shifting expectations for this new iteration of Real Estate, the first without founding member, guitarist Matt Mondanile. But from there “Darling” is quintessential Real Estate, complete with rolling guitar licks and Martin Courtney IV’s wispy, relaxed vocal performance. Most bands find difficulty switching up their sound, but Real Estate appears content re-instituting past hallmarks into a slightly updated outfit. Traditionally, such stasis is a listless bore, yet with “Darling,” Real Estate shows how much territory they still have to cover.
In Mind is out 17 March via Domino.
