2016 was a terrible year in many regards, but in one small way, 2016 was a year to remember fondly. That’s because this was one of the best years for new music in recent memory. Artists ranging from David Bowie to Beyoncé, Radiohead to Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar to Frank Ocean all released new albums this year, as did pop heavyweights Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, the Weeknd, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. So no, 2016 was not a good year. But, as is so often the case, we can turn to the year’s music for some semblance of comfort. These are the 50 best albums of the 2016.
10. Lana Del Rey, “Freak”
In which Lana Del Rey and Father John Misty drop acid and swim with mermaids. Don’t say you’re not intrigued.
10. Isaiah Rashad
Isaiah Rashad could have been on this list a lot earlier. During the press tour for his excellent debut LP The Sun’s Tirade, Rashad confirmed that his debut’s long gestation period was a result of his substance abuse. After Top Dawg Entertainment nearly canned the whole project, Rashad fought back, not so much with a vengeance as with an appreciation of his circumstance. 2016 was one of the best years in rap that I can remember, and Rashad’s chopped southern flow was the perfect chaser to the frenetic pace life, and music, came at us this year.
