Dua Lipa is a singer-songwriter from the UK and despite her debut album not being released until February 2017, she’s already released an astounding five tracks purportedly featured on her self-titled debut. The most recent of these tracks – “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” – is the best indicator yet of Lipa’s potential, a reminder why she was shortlisted on BBC’s Sound of Music 2016. The song punches with forceful thrust, yet Lipa comes across refreshingly apathetic. “If you don’t like the way I talk then why am I on your mind,” she interrogates on the chorus. The line is delivered in a way that showcases Lipa’s confidence, not her insecurities. In other words, it’s not her, it’s you. That’s perhaps the song’s best trait, how Lipa isn’t dependent on her subject’s affection; she’s doing just fine by herself. No matter if they fuck it up, because as “Blow Your Mind” indicates, Lipa won’t.
