T.I. never really left the rap scene, but his presence has certainly been missed since he was at the apex of the genre circa 2008. “Dope” – from his forthcoming The Dime Trap – isn’t an attempt by T.I. to create his next mainstream #1, and it’s all the better for it. The song breezes by to a similar vibe created on Dr. Dre’s Compton, which is no accident considering Dre himself produced this cut. Kendrick Lamar collaborator Marsha Ambrosius assists with a warm vocal performance, going hand-in-hand with the Aaliyah-sampling beachfront production. As much as it sounds like 24-karat gold, “Dope” is never heavy; it has the weight of a dime bag but the potency of an ounce.
