When Kanye West dropped “Real Friends” a couple weeks back, it came with a snippet of the Kendrick Lamar-featuring track “No More Parties In L.A.,” and now that song has surfaced in full. As much promise as the track held when we heard a glimpse of it with “Friends,” the song exceeds those promises tenfold in its full-length form.
When Yeezus was released in 2013, critics complained about West not focusing as much time on his lyrics as he had on previous records. That complaint is washed away here, as West sounds as vital and commanding as ever. And Kendrick Lamar, following his thrilling Tonight Show performance, is having as much fun on record as we’ve heard him have in years. One line even has K.Dot rapping, “I like your bougie booty / Come Erykah Ba-do me.” When Ye goes in around the 2:45 mark, a good song becomes great, as West delivers a two and a half minute verse with startling clarity. It’s a testament to these two rap titans that their collaboration doesn’t take itself too seriously, while it also never comes across as insignificant. For two artists at the top of their craft, “Parties” is the rare track that doesn’t weigh them down, but lifts them up.
SWISH is out February 11.
