Nicole Dollanganger received one of the best cosigns a young artist could ask for when Claire Boucher (Grimes) was so moved by her forthcoming LP that she created Eerie Organization to oversee the release. And while it is easy to look for similarities between Grimes and Dollanganger, they begin and end with the two artists’ delicate, faint vocals that mask the brutal honesty of their lyrics.
“You’re So Cool” finds Dollanganger swept-up in something closer to idolatry than love. On the chorus, she repeats what her subject once said to her: “When I’m good, I’m very good / But when I’m bad, I’m better.” She isn’t threatened by the statement; she’s consumed by it. In a year of big musical statements, the quiet, creeping “You’re So Cool” rings among the loudest.
Natural Born Losers is out this fall through Eerie.
