CURRENT: A$AP Rocky – “M’s”

While A$AP Rocky has been away from the music scene, it can be easy to forget how big a force he was from 2011-13. The Live.Love.A$AP mixtape released in 2011 was one of the year’s best rap releases, free or otherwise. He followed that up with a spot performing with Rihanna during the opening of the VMAs, while also owning urban radio after the release of his debut LP Long.Live.A$AP. Since then, though, he’s been largely quiet. But that silence is interrupted on “M’s,” the dark, tense new track Lord Flacko just unveiled. “It’s like lately I ain’t myself, I’d rather hang myself,” raps Rocky at one point. If that’s the case, then he certainly appears to find himself during the course of “M’s.” If anything, “M’s” recalls the blunted, dazed atmospherics of his breakout mixtape, but with the knowledge that the story ends with Rocky making it.
