CURRENT: Waxahatchee – “Breathless”

Katie Crutchfield’s third album as Waxahatchee, Ivy Tripp, begins with the incredible “Breathless,” a sprawling, suspended track that directly contrasts the sonic bursts that comprise the rest of Tripp. On “Breathless,” Waxahatchee rejects the doting eyes of a lover, as she sings, “I’m not trying to be a rose … I’m not trying to be seen.” During the next chorus, she makes her intent more explicitly known. “I’m not trying to be yours,” she directly sings. “I’m not trying to have it all.” Like everyone else, she just needs room to breathe.

Ivy Tripp is out now via Merge.
