Carly Rae Jepsen may never reach the heights of “Call Me Maybe” again, but if she continues releasing tunes as strong as “All That,” she’ll certainly continue to have a place in the music industry. Backed by the brilliant mind behind Blood Orange, Dev Hynes, and the highly valuable producer Ariel Reichstaid, Hynes’ melodic contributions are immediately recognizable, recalling the more saccharine moments on Cupid Deluxe. Perhaps the best thing about “All That” is how CRJ isn’t trying to convert someone into a lover. “I will be there / I will be your friend,” she comfortingly sings. There’s a warmth to “All That” that is lacking in most top 40 radio-fare, making this as essential and universal as pop music can be.
