In what appears to be a major goof on Sony’s part, word slipped last night that Earl Sweatshirt is set to release a new album next week, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside.
(Maybe he and Courtney Barnett can just sit together?)
In the midst of some of the biggest hip-hop releases in years, thanks to Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s latest – and Kanye’s soon-to-drop So Help Me God – Earl Sweatshirt is diving in the deep end of the pool. The Doris rapper is as dour as ever, comforted only by the lo-fi, muffled beat and tattering of a drum loop.
Within in the monochromatic atmosphere of the track, Earl continues to sharpen his verses, confessing to suffering from panic attacks, yet still finding the effort to position himself at the top of his class. “I was making waves / You were surfin’ in ’em,” he raps. It’s a good sign that even when he’s only floating on the surface of the water, he continues to make waves.

I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside is coming 23 March through Sony.
