While both Harriet Brown and Astronauts, Etc. flew under the radar with their 2014 releases, the two acts join forces on the smooth, velvety single “Fiction”, featuring an assist in production from Toro Y Moi. Having so many cooks in the kitchen could be a disaster, but the three artists share similar musical vocabularies, allowing the collaboration to thrive. From Astronauts, Etc.’s faint, wispy productions to Brown’s lucid, cascading compositions, the pair find common ground in their slowly unfurling, melodic tendencies.
“Fiction’s” dark, rumbling core serves the track well, providing a nice backdrop for the duality of the two vocalists voices together. There’s a confidence here that doesn’t usually come from an artist whose debut EP has less than 1000 spins according to Spotify. But Brown, along with Astronauts, Etc. makes his biggest musical statement yet with “Fiction.” This song, equally beautiful and dangerous, is easy to sink into without giving us a whole picture. It’s like stumbling into a dark room and reaching for the lights. They might not be on, but you know they’re there.
