The last word anyone would use to describe present day Thom Yorke is angry. Annoyed? Yes. Paranoid. Sure. But he has definitely mellowed out sonically, as evidenced by everything from Radiohead’s brilliant In Rainbows to this year’s solo Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes.
Thom Yorke’s recently released track from those Modern Boxes sessions, “Youwouldn’tlikemewhenI’mangry”, hits all the checkmarks of Yorke’s solo repertoire, with its skittering beat and Yorke’s dazzling falsetto. But this one packs a greater punch than most of Boxes, and is up there with “Hearing Damage” and “Black Swan” as one of his best solo tunes. “You’ve built this up,” he sings repeatedly before the song calmly ends. No one would consider Yorke angry, because thankfully for us, he wants to be liked.
Happy Holidays to all. Let’s make 2015 a year we can all be proud of.
