Mike Hadreas has quietly become one of this generation’s greatest singer-songwriters, with his sensational 2012 album Put Ur Back In 2 It being one of that year’s most affecting musical works. The muted deliver of that release didn’t hit at all the complexities of Hadreas’ personality, but his latest, Too Bright, appears to find Hadreas in all his multicolor beauty.
Lead single “Queen” is an emphatic, combative track that quickly becomes one of Perfume Genius’ most energetic compositions yet. Upon releasing the song, Hadreas wrote that the track was inspired by “gay panic” he experiences on a daily basis, writing:
“Sometimes I see faces of blank fear when I walk by…if these fucking people want to give me some power—if they see me as some sea witch with penis tentacles that are always prodding and poking and seeking to convert the muggles—well, here she comes.”
Hadreas knows that, despite our best attempts, closed-minded people are always going to arrange the facts in ways to fit their reality, no matter how out-of-touch they may be. And Hadreas seems to be asking, taunting those individuals by challenging them: Is this what you really want?
