Lykke Li follows up the excellent Wounded Rhymes with the equally sublime I Never Learn, released tomorrow (6 May 2014). Among the new album’s standouts is the stellar “Gunshot,” first teased a month ago. Already highly emotive, Li’s newest compositions are somehow even more vulnerable than what she’s released prior. “And the shot goes through my head and back,” she sings, not so much reexamining past trials but offering us that rare glimpse of the scar forming in real time. Her use of a gun as a metaphor for a romantic relationship is quite telling, and in the context of the full length player is an emotionally devastating highpoint. “Gun shot, I’ll never get you back,” she achingly sings during the chorus. You always must pay attention when you let go of the trigger.
