CURRENT: Todd Terje – “Johnny and Mary” (Robert Palmer cover) [feat. Bryan Ferry]

In the context of Todd Terje’s brilliant new LP It’s Album Time, “Johnny and Mary” sticks out like a ruby in a pile of diamonds. The majority of Time is spent living in the moment, making “Johnny and Mary”‘s retrospection that much more of a rare gem. Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music delivers a deeply emotional vocal performance, sung with a wistfulness perfectly in-line with the lyrical content and the setting painted by Terje.  “…Always running around,” Ferry sings, as if tired of running himself. The same can be said of Terje, who shows us a side of him that pushes his limits to lengths unimaginable to a wide audience before now. Consider this among the best cover songs of 2014. Like the rest in its lineage, “Johnny and Mary” (2014), is a repackaging of an old relic, while also connecting the dots between two generations of pop music.
