It’s almost unfair, isn’t? The Antlers couldn’t escape a gorgeous melody if it were a wet bar of soap. Since Hospice (2009), the Antlers have excelled at crafting individualistic yet universal indie rock anthems. Add “Palace” to that list.
The sublime horns that come in halfway through the debut single from the forthcoming Familiars ( Anti-; 17 June) catapults the song into unchartered waters. Lead singer Peter Silbermann lets it all hang out on “Palace,” switching out the quiet whimpers of Burst Apart for something more bombastic. There’s still a tint of melancholia, which is as much a part of the band’s DNA as any other aspect. But these guys aren’t chained down by their sadness; each album they seem more intent on breaking through.
