This is a little unexpected. Sharon Van Etten last showed off her remarkable talents on 2012’s Tramp (featuring the excellent “Serpents”), with her blend of guitar-driven indie pop taking a grimy and tattered path towards critical acclaim. On the first taste of her new album Are We There?, Van Etten cleans up her aesthetic with a polished production that doesn’t take away a thing from the singer-songwriter’s honest and emotive compositions. And those jagged guitars that punctuate the chorus show that no matter how far she may take us from her previous sound, she’s intrinsically the same. We’re already there.
Sharon Van Etten’s forthcoming studio LP Are We There? is set for a 27 May release in the U.S. via Jagjaguwar.
