CURRENT: Beck – “Blue Moon”

When an artist claims to be “returning to form,” it usually means that the artist has realized what made him or her so successful in the first place. So when Beck announced his first studio album since 2008’s Modern Guilt would be reminiscent to his outstanding early 2000s work on Sea Change, it was both a welcome announcement and a possible omen signaling Beck’s settling down phase.

While “Blue Moon” does indeed share certain qualities with Sea Change, it is much more than a rehash of past events. Lyrically and vocally, Beck is emotionally charged, as he asks his subject to not “leave me on my own.” Some subtle electronics create a gorgeous, climactic finale, but it all begins with one of Beck’s most personal songs in a long time.

Morning Phase is scheduled for a 25 February release through Capitol Records. Pre-order through iTunes now and get a copy of “Blue Moon” immediately.
