“I can love it / Or I can leave it,” sings Joe Mount on the new Metronomy single released earlier today, the first taste of new music from Metronomy since their rather stellar 2011 LP The English Riviera. “I’m Aquarius” skirts around with an energy similar to what Baths’ explored earlier this year on Obsidian. Sonically, it’s a bit of a departure from the lighter tones of their previous LP, largely focusing on darker, slightly more ominous notes to further their agenda. “I’m aware of the procedure / But normally it’s me that leaves her,” he later sings, aware of his destructive habits yet unable to resist in succumbing to those habits. It’s the sense of a simmering conflict that makes the songs pop, and hints at another big leap for Metronomy when they release Love Letters early next year.
