CURRENT: Kwabs – “Last Stand” (prod. by SOHN)

Kwabena Adjepong, performing as Kwabs, is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter from Britain with a natural ability to create warm yet forward thinking electro pop, based off his first two singles “Spirit Fade” and the recently released “Last Stand.” Kwabs enlists producer (and excellent songwriter in his own regard SOHN) to help deliver one of the more soulful and passionate singles of 2013. “War’s over / but I’m still soldierin’ on,” sings Kwabs gravely at the beginning. Lyrically, Kwabs’ uses an open journal approach to express his thoughts, and his vocals do more than enough to sell the material.  “Keep my heaven just to keep me clean / Keep the devil watching over me,” he later sings. During the chorus, he exposes the scars from a previous relationship, as he croons “Still burning from the heat of your touch.” It’s those embers that fuel his fire, and all the while SOHN, responsible for the truly great “Bloodflows” (2013), keeps up with Adjepong with a slow burning, truly captivating production.

CURRENT: Blood Orange – “You’re Not Good Enough”

Devonté Hynes continues on his torrid streak of fantastic, R&B-inspired, pop singles with “You’re Not Good Enough,” the second single off his forthcoming LP Cupid Deluxe (out 18 November on Domino). Whereas first single “Chamakay” was the biggest departure sonically from Hynes previous material, “Enough” fits nicely into the narrative he constructed on his 2011 debut. The song is one of the more uptempo numbers in Hynes’ catalog, but features his trademarked guitar stylings and another smooth, bittersweet chorus to slow dance to.

CURRENT: Disclosure – “Apollo”

After delivering arguably the best dance album of the year with Settle, it would be downright greedy to demand more music from the Lawrence brothers so soon. Alas, Disclosure has been kind enough to deliver a previously unreleased track, “Apollo,” today. It’s up there with the best moments on Settle, yet it’s more emphatic, thumping production is served better as a one-off single than it would have been on their LP.
