While the charts in 2013 have been dominated by Macklemore, Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, and everything Pharrell touches, and various indie circles continue to flirt with electronica, perhaps the most fruitful vein to emerge in indie music this year is the alt-90’s indebted female rock ‘n roll from Torres, Waxahatchee, and now Courtney Barnett. Torres and Cerulean Salt remain two of the essential listens of 2013, and with “Avant Gardener,” Barnett is set to join the ranks of 2013’s best female rockers.
Much like the fawned-over “Night Still Comes” from Neko Case, the instrumental on “Gardener,” while fantastic, takes a back seat to Barnett’s incredible gift as a lyricist. “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cause I play guitar / I think she’s clever cause she stops people dying,” will go down as one of the best couplets this year, being equally self-deprecating and appreciative of those who seldom get the praise they deserve.
