Okkervil River has been flying under the radar for a while now, releasing stellar album after stellar album. The Will Sheff-fronted band is set to release a new album in September, and today NPR is offering a teaser of the album (after first single “It Was My Season” and the instrumental “Lido Pier Suicide Car”) in the form of “Down Down The Deep River.”
Sheff’s lyricism has always been a sticking point in Why You Should Care About Okkervil River, and “Deep River” shows he has not lost any of his touch. His fiery delivery gives added weight to the track, where he tries to convince us “We’ll make it a choice, somehow.” He doesn’t have all the answers, but on “Deep River” Sheff is certainly the type of person you want on your side when you’re trying to figure things out.
The Silver Gymnasium will be out 3 September, but NPR will be offering the album up as part of their First Listen program beginning 26 August.
