Before her turn towards the futuristic with The ArchAndroid, Janelle Monae was stealing the spotlight from OutKast on their last release together. In fact, it was her work on the soundtrack to Idlewild that jump started her music career. By the time she was featured on the Hot 100 smash hit “We Are Young” by fun., the eccentric singer from Kansas, Monae had already collected a small yet devout collection of fans.
On “Q.U.E.E.N.,” Monae teams up with Erykah Badu for one of the funkiest tracks of the year, a song with such unbridled energy it rivals her single with Big Boi, “Tightrope.” This is an empowerment anthem that would make Beyoncé proud, complete with the soon-to-be catchphrase as Monae sings, “The booty don’t lie.” The whole track has a very 90s OutKast vibe to it, providing just the proper dose of nostalgia while not overshadowing this present day work of art.
The Electric Lady, the new album from Janelle Monae, is due out sometime this fall.
