I’ve been listening to Deerhunter’s consistently fantastic discography lately, with Microcastle and Halcyon Digest being among the best release of this century. On 7 May 2013, the band will release their first album since 2010’s Digest, titled Monomania.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon hosted the band last night, where Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, and the rest of the band debuted the title track off their newest batch of recordings. “Monomania” has much more urgency to it than anything the band has done since Microcastle, as well as the more recent solo material from Bradford Cox (Atlas Sound’s Parallax) or Lockett Pundt (Lotus Plaza’s Spooky Action at a Distance).
“Send me an angel,” Cox howls on the new offering. I’m not sure it’s redemption Cox is looking for, rather a sign that the world isn’t left up to chance, that there are cogs in a machine that make this thing spin. The latter half of the track devolves into a blistering array of guitar parts, instantly signaling what type of effect having added a new guitarist has made on the band’s sound. There’s certainly a lot to love here, and even more goodness awaits in the coming months.
“Monomania,” the track, is available for download via iTunes, where you can also preorder the highly anticipated new disc.
